HOW WILL I LEARN?
You will have a mixture of classroom-based subjects, laboratory practicals, mandatory work placement and independent study. You will be expected to complete assignments throughout the year.
HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
A full Award is granted on passing the relevant eight components. You will be assessed throughout and at the end of the year (Continuous Assessment). On successful completion of each component, you will be awarded a Pass, a Merit or a Distinction grade.
WHAT WE WOULD LIKE FROM YOU!
Applicants with a passion for working with animals, a willingness to work hard and a commitment to study. You will be responsible for securing an appropriate off site work placement before the beginning of the course.
CAREER/PROGRESSION OPPORTUNITIES
Level 6 is directed more at employment/setting up your own business etc. whereas level 5 is the primary CAO progression route.
However, Dundalk IT will accept results from Animal Science Levels 5 & 6 combined as an entry requirement into Vet Nursing. TUS Letterkenny will accept Animal Science Level 6 for Advanced Entry into year 2 of their Vet Nursing degree should places be available. You can also select “any award” in this search box and this will return all courses open to students who have successfully completed any QQI Award.
This Award can act as a gateway into the animal industry. As this is a level 6, more responsible roles in Pet care are open to graduates. Past students are working in animal welfare organisations (Dogs Trust); safari parks (Tayto Safari Park); as Animal Care Assistants in veterinary clinics, pet stores, kennels, stables and in Dublin Zoo.

Note: Students should note that some of the practical work on this course requires some physical effort and direct contact with animals. Consequently, students with any back problems, respiratory illnesses or allergies or indeed any other injuries or conditions should discuss this matter with the course coordinator at enrolment. You must have proof of a current tetanus vaccination.
