You will have a mixture of classroom-based subjects, laboratory practicals, mandatory work placement and independent study. You will be expected to complete assignments throughout the year.


A full award is granted on passing the relevant eight components. You will be assessed throughout and at the end of the year. On successful completion of each component, you will be awarded a Pass, a Merit or a Distinction grade


An ambition to study Computer Science at Third Level with a focus on seeking a career in the Software Development field. Familiarity in the use of software applications and an interest in the more technical aspects of IT i.e. computer programming. A level of Mathematics which equates to Leaving Certificate Ordinary level is also required. As this course is of a technical nature, a willingness to work hard and the ability to invest the time, outside the classroom, is required to ensure success. You will be responsible for securing an appropriate off-site work placement before the beginning of the course.

The programme is particularly suited to people with an analytical mind  and a keen interest in problem solving.


Surveys have shown serious and increasing shortages of Software Development personnel in all developed countries, including Ireland. This ensures excellent job opportunities in this industry. Students who successfully complete their studies can progress to UCD, DIT and ITB. Students may also progress to participating Higher Education Institutions (HEI’s) through the QQI Higher Education Links Scheme.

A student over 16 years seeking entry to this programme does not need a previous formal qualification.  However, the student must demonstrate at interview the capacity to successfully participate on this programme. This includes both the academic and work experience elements of the programme. Should the student have previous qualifications, one of the following may be advantageous for admission to the programme

  • Leaving Certificate
  • Students who may not have formal academic requirements but who have the ability to successfully participate on the course will be considered. (RPL Recognition of Prior Learning)
  • Mature students  (over 21 years) may be entitled to VTOS funding
  • Applicants must have attained a Pass grade in Leaving Cert Ordinary Level Maths or equivalent
  • Students who do not have the necessary Maths requirement must sit a short Maths test in Killester College as part of the Application process
  • Interview
